Brussels in a day | Belgium

One of those impromptu drives took us to Brussels in Belgium all the way from Berlin. By road isn’t surely the best way to get to Brussels considering there are good flight and train options. But Autobahns are a driver’s pleasure in Germany and we for one do love to drive, more on that later. Discounting all the driving time, we just had a day in Brussels. We tried to do all things Belgian.

We started in the old town square and were transported into the bygone era walking the cobbled stone streets. The Grand Place is the city’s town square and is massive, bordered by buildings with stunning facades. The gothic style town hall further added to the grandeur. The whole place is abuzz with restaurants and cafes.

The famous landmark of Brussels, Mannekin Piss

There are also lot of chocolate shops around the square. One can easily get into a sugar high while in Brussels. Every street surely has a shop serving sweet delicacies, actually on most occasions more than one. If you were to sample just the chocolates alone, you would need days together to taste the whole lot variants. The real belgian chocolates are handmade and crafted to perfection.

Chocolates for every mood

We let the sugar high continue and dodged in a warm Belgian waffle. A traditional waffle is just dusted with powdered sugar, but then who can resist some chocolate syrup on it.

We passed by many street side snack bars serving fries. Although termed french fries, the fries actually originated in Belgium. This country doesn’t believe in moderation, the potato strips are actually fried twice and they certainly taste different.

Comic strips are squeezed in on many walls in the city of Brussels. We found at least five of them in the old town within a few minutes of walking, so there sure are lots to be discovered. In fact there is a comic strip walk that takes you through all the streets with these comics painted . If you still can’t get enough of them, the city also has a museum of comics. Yes Tintin was created by a Belgian Cartoonist and Brussels is a pilgrimage to any comic lover.

Comic strips are so unique to Brussels

We also stopped by at Délirium Café before concluding the day. Its difficult to miss the pink elephant symbols adorning the cafe. It has thousands of Belgian beers listed on the menu and is virtually like a museum. It also incidentally holds a guinness record for most varieties commercially available. Need we say more.
