Rolling down a hill in New Zealand | Rotorua

“Zorbing

Drive a few kilometers outside of the city of Rotorua in NewZealand and one sees a lot of huge plastic spheres rolling down the hills. Rotorua is the birthplace of zorbing, another one of those eccentric inventions by New Zealanders. Zorbing is the sport of rolling down a hill in an inflatable ball When we started off the day, zorbing wasn’t on the list. But after a day of exploring the thermal wonderland in the nearby valley we were esurient for some adventure. We just turned into a side road after seeing a sign board by Zorb Rotorua claiming to give us a taste of zorbing. We made our way to the ticketing counter. Only in NZ we found the absence of any waiver or liability forms. We even did bungee jumping in Queenstown without signing any piece of paper.

We along with a group of enthusiasts were taken to the top of a hill in a car. There were an array of zorbs lined up set to be let loose down the hill. A zorb is a huge sphere comprised of two balls, one inside the other separated by an air layer which acts as a shock absorber. It typically fits upto two or three people.

We both opted to go down together in one zorb, the ride is named the Double trouble. Did I mention the zorb was partly filled with water. After a day in the sun, it was all that we needed to cool off. We dived into the water filled zorb through the narrow mouth, just enough to fit one person at a time. A big push by the guide set our zorb rolling and sending us down the hill. With each rotation we were crashing into each other, under and over, splashing from side to side. We went barreling down the track, laughing and screaming the entire way. By the time the zorb came to a stop we were completely drenched and feeling refreshed.

We saw a few people taking the action to a different notch, by lying under the zorb as their friends rolled over. Applause to whoever thought rolling down a hill in a wet ball could be so much fun. It was an unforgettable experience at the very least. Everyone should try it. We just wished it lasted even longer.
